Acupuncture for Mental Health

While treatments like talking therapies and medication for mental health have come a long way, you may still be seeking additional ways to support your wellbeing. Whether you have a formal diagnosis of anxiety or depression, or are simply looking to enhance your self-care routine, acupuncture can be an incredibly valuable complement.

How can acupuncture support my mental health?

Regulating the Nervous System

  • With regular and consistent treatment, acupuncture has been shown to significantly aid in regulating the nervous system. Auricular acupuncture (needles inserted into the ear) and ear seeds (acupressure stickers) are particularly effective in calming the sympathetic nervous system, which can be overactive during periods of acute stress or ongoing anxiety.

Deep Emotional Balance

  • From a Chinese Medicine perspective, acupuncture works on a deep level to strengthen the mind-body-spirit connection, which can be especially beneficial in managing depression by helping to balance your emotions from within.

Mind-Body-Spirit Focus

  • This connection is also central for those experiencing symptoms related to PTSD, insomnia, and grief, offering holistic support.

Support for Neurodivergence

  • For individuals with neurodivergence or diagnoses like Autism or ADHD, acupuncture can be a positive addition to managing the mental health challenges that can overlap with these conditions.

Inducing Relaxation

  • Relaxation is a commonly cited "side effect" of acupuncture treatments, regardless of the primary reason for your visit—so be prepared to enter a state of zen during your appointment!

During our first treatment, I’ll carry out an assessment to create the best possible treatment plan for you. You’re welcome to share as much or as little information as you’re comfortable with, especially if discussing your background is upsetting for you. My aim is to provide a safe space for your mental health to be nurtured. If I feel that more acute treatment, such as talking therapies or medication, might be beneficial, I will refer you appropriately. Otherwise, we’ll proceed with acupuncture, focusing on offering you the most support possible for your mental well-being.
