Acupuncture/Non-needling for Children

Many people are surprised to learn that acupuncture and acupressure can be safely performed on children, from infancy through adolescence (ages 0-16). In fact, my paediatric patients are often some of the bravest!

Paediatric Acupuncture & Calm Kids No Needles AcuTherapy

Gentle, holistic treatments for children and teens in South Croydon

Children are naturally full of energy and in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) we call this Qi. When that energy becomes imbalanced, it can show up as a range of issues including anxiety, tics, sleep difficulties, tummy pain, mood changes or recurring illness.

Paediatric acupuncture and non-needling techniques focus on supporting your child’s unique constitution, helping to bring their system back into balance. Treatments aim to primarily regulate the nervous system, thereby supporting immunity and healthy growth and development.

It can be support a wide range of issues, including:

  • Babies: feeding, colic, reflux, sleep and postural imbalances

  • Emotional wellbeing, anxiety and mood changes

  • Support with neurodivergence including ADHD and Autism

  • Digestive problems such as constipation, IBS, tummy aches

  • Recurrent coughs and colds

  • Headaches

  • Bedwetting (secondary enuresis)

  • Puberty and menstrual health concerns

For children (and parents!) who are nervous about needles, I offer Calm Kids No Needles AcuTherapy, a completely needle-free option. Using a specialised Japanese technique called Shonishin, we use gentle, rhythmic movements on specific points to regulate the nervous system and support healing. This may be combined with the soothing effects of essential oils, chosen specifically for your child and diluted to a safe concentration. It’s a relaxing, sensory-friendly treatment that helps children feel safe, grounded and centred.

If your child wishes to try acupuncture needles, I use specific paediatric sizes (as small as 0.12mm in width), and as a child's energy is much more reactive than an adult's, less needles are used and for a shorter length of time.

Other methods such as silicone cupping, gentle gua sha, and heat therapy may be employed to enhance the treatment, especially during the first sessions as your child gets used to the process.

All paediatric patients must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during treatment, and at no point will a child be forced to undergo treatment. As a paediatric doctor by background, treating children with acupuncture is a privilege I take very seriously and I ensure your child’s safety and comfort are always prioritised.
